Like many Aussies, I have a red tube of Paw Paw ointment in my handbag. It’s claimed to be good for every skin ailment known to man – nappy rash, excema, burns, skin infections, insect bites, the works. I started wondering how much science is actually behind the product. I found a paw-paw ointment website (http://papaw-ointment.com/), which amongst various claims regarding the numerous health benefits of paw-paw, had the following statement:
If you wish to find more information about papaya and it’s benefits, you can find a plethora of information on various governmental and scientific study websites. The benefits of papaya can be found not only in papaw creams and lotions, but also by eating fresh papaya fruit.
Some direct links to actual studies would have been nice. I’m not spending half my day trolling through ‘various governmental and scientific study websites’.
Paw-paw cream will remain a lip balm and not a cure-all in my house.
