Day 39. Observation

In September 2012 on September 20, 2012 at 3:39 pm

One of the components of the scientific method is observation.

Here are some observations from a 7-year old as she watched a candle burn:

  • melting wax,
  • heat,
  • smell,
  • light,
  • liquid wax,
  • candle shrinking, and
  • smoke.

Also in her list:

  • oxygen is here.

This actually is not an observation, it’s a conclusion. The young scientist has considered her observations, thought about what she knows about burning and applied it to make an informed decision about the environment.

Sometimes kids don’t know all the steps of science, but they display innate skills in its methods.
