It’s a hot day with a searing northerly wind on Yorke Peninsula, and we’re playing Bird Bingo.
It’s a beautiful game, featuring 64 international species of bird illustrated finely in water colours.
A small accompanying booklet provides a brief description of each species, including the following Australian icon often spotted around these parts:
Emu (Dromanius novaehollandiae):
Flightless Australian bird that is the tallest species after the ostrich. Stands 2 metres high and can run at 50km/hour. Sometimes goes weeks without eating and may swallow small stones to help grind down food.
We’re hoping to spot a few at Innes National Park later in the week.
